How long has it been since you’ve watched the wind ripple through a field of grass? Close your eyes and do it right now, using this breezy mix by Ninja Tune legend Nathan Fake for a soundtrack. Fair warning: after a while the grass becomes sparse, revealing a brightly lit techno dancefloor underneath.

Hot on the heels of his latest EP on Ninja Tune comes a new podcast from Nathan Fake. An outsider artist since day one, Fake uses cheap and easy-to-acquire technology to make his always idiosyncratic sounds. They have always been leftfield and thoughtful dreamscapes that fuse techno, experimental and ambient together, but have recently tended towards a darker, more intense place. That is played out across the 65 minute selection he has put together for us here. It features unreleased music from Fake and friends, as well as tracks from Karen Gwyer, long time Border Community label mate James Holden, plus Peverelist, Autechre and more. After a synth heavy and beatless start, lo-fi and fuzzy styles of electro, acid and techno all add up to the sort of primal yet intriguing trip you would expect from such a revered underground figure.

“It hurts as much as it’s worth”, said Julian Barnes once. It’s a line that feels appropriate for this mix by Dave Howell, saying goodbye to the composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who passed away earlier this year. I nicked that line from the essay “Joy” by Zadie Smith, by the way. You can read the whole essay here, because someone posted it on Genius. (Is that a thing people do now? Post essays on a site dedicated to song lyrics? Brilliant.) In the essay, she makes the distinction between pleasure, which is a mild and reasonable choice, and joy, which is more intense and filled with pain. She asks herself why humans desire self-endangering joy, when relatively safe pleasure is a much more sensible option. Listening to this mix isn’t very reasonable either. It’s pure joy.
