The IKEA x Design Indaba 'ÖVERALLT' Collection Is Coming

Your interior deserves! Supplier of pretty much every household worldwide, IKEA, is releasing a limited edition collaboration with renowned design collective Indaba. For the occasion, a select group of talented designers hailing from five different African countries each collaborated with an in-house IKEA creator. The teams named their brainchild collection ‘ÖVERALLT’, highlighting the joy of traditional and modern rituals, community living and solid conversations while enjoying a meal together. After debuting at the Design Indaba Festival in Cape Town earlier this year, this new collection including larger furniture, tableware and textiles will be available starting May 7 2019.

Design Indaba is a prominent institute, promoting and purveying the highest grade in worldwide creativity since the project was founded in 1995. The collective’s yearly festival in South Africa sets the stage for talent to convene and shine for the globe to see. A few years ago, IKEA contacted Design Indaba for an introduction to the contemporary African design scene. This year, their collaboration comes to life through the work of several designers within fashion, sculpture, architecture and furniture design: Issa Diabaté, Selly Raby Kane, Naeem Biviji, Bethan Rayner, Mariam Hazem, Hend Riad, Renee Rossouw, Sindiso Khumalo, Laduma Ngxokolo and Bibi Seck of the esteemed studio Birsel + Seck.

The collection’s storage units, curved solid eucalyptus benches and printed chairs are particular standouts. The dining table set’s design stems from the Kenyan evening ritual where friends convene with chairs clutched under their arms to talk about their day and life. Designer & architect Issa Diabaté looks forward to seeing what all of us will put our spin on: “Depending on where the designs are assembled, they can take on different personalities.” The untreated plywood of a few designs is an open invitation for customization by drawing, tagging or painting. Famed Senegalese fashion designer Selly Rabe Kane created a braided basket design and remembers: “Working on this collaboration was a means for me to explore the ritual of braiding through time and to understand its past and current functions. Through the process, I realized that braiding was first and foremost about language, communication, bridging gaps and declining identities.”

I guess this summer we’re all perching on our hardwood benches outside and ostracizing our phones to nightstand land. That’s an official decree!
