L.A. designer and creative director Chris Stamp has been doing just as his surname suggests for the longest: making a mark. As one of the noted streetwear, skate and surfing dons of the 2000s, he has been running his label Stampd for the past decade - growing from making hand-painted shoes out of college to a thriving worldwide business. Chris Stamp has collaborated with anyone from BAPE to Puma, Gap, N.E.R.D and Vans. Now, Stamp’s latest effort comes very close to (every) home: get into the IKEA x Chris Stamp “SPÄNST” collection, launching this spring.
Spanning everything from an actual skateboard (the first ever for IKEA, somewhere between a longboard and a more technical one) and basketball hoop to a lounge chair, the collection unites activewear with soft furnishings, a table, USB-charged portable neon lighting and sleek storage facilities with a minimal edge for anyone making moves.
‘SPÄNST’ means ‘elasticity’ in Swedish and represents Stamp’s signature monochrome, street-inflected aesthetic throughout. Leather, marble print details, wood and acrylic plastic dominate as well as clever touches like the longitude and latitude numerals of the first IKEA store and Stampd’s L.A. flagship. “The SPÄNST collection is an attempt to reach young people by looking at home furnishing products from a slightly different angle. As a fashion designer, I know that people want to show other people the clothes, shoes and accessories that they have. why spend $300 on a pair of sneakers and hide them in the closet?”, Chris Stamp clarified.
The steel mesh wardrobe and clothing racks, clear shoe storage boxes plus deck/shoe stands are particularly clever and it looks like it’s finally time to toss out the odd clothes hanger collection you’ve been amassing. The collection is an invigorating addition to what the homeware icon has on offer this year – but honestly, IKEA needs to chill because between this, the still-upcoming Virgil Abloh collection, Byredo fragrance, SONOS range, Tom Dixon set, Bea Åkerlund designs and African design collab ÖVERALLT everybody's homes are about to spill over.
IKEA x Chris Stamp “SPÄNST” collection ranges from €2,99 for hangers to €249 for the table. The collection will be released on May 7 2018 in IKEA stores worldwide and online.
