Mk.gee - 'Alesis'
It’s pretty funny that this man’s first EP was called ‘Pronounced McGee’, really. And at the risk of stretching the funny beyond breaking point: Mk.gee has been making quite a name for himself as a singer-songwriter this year. He’s probably your favourite artist’s favourite new artist right now. In the video for ‘Alesis’, he’s doing what people have been praising him for: walking around with his guitar and singing (live) in a way that’s somehow familiar, strange, casual and earnest all the same time. The same goes for the lyrics, with ‘casual’ meaning ‘I wrote this when I was high’ (literally: "I'm in another body/Whose in somebody else / … / You're not a poet, you're a liar / I'm not a liar, I'm just high”) and earnest in flashes like “Why bleed when we don’t have to?”. The song feels hopeful, like the realisation that life is a dance and every moment can be another chance to dance our way out of our constrictions.
