Ugh, I miss Prince.
Tomorrow, it'll be two years since he was taken from us. The Prince Estate has been releasing and announcing unheard gems for a while now and even though I'm conflicted about the way everything but his casket has been auctioned off (see: Jay-Z's "Caught Their Eyes"), as a fan it's impossible not to feel grateful for hearing fantastic material that had always been locked away in the vaults.
"Nothing Compares 2 U" was written for funk band "The Family", who released it in 1985. Sinead O' Connor turned it into a global phenomenon years later and Prince released a fantastic live version with Rosie Gaines on one of his compilations. But before all that, Prince recorded his own studio version, back in 1984. This is the version we never got to hear until now. And yes, it's pretty incredible. The Estate set the music to unseen 1984 rehearsal footage of Prince singing and moving like no one else can or ever will.
