Kamasi Washington's Hub-Tones Video Is a Pan African Triumph

Kamasi Washington's Hub-Tones Video Is a Pan African Triumph

On “Hub-Tones”, saxophone genius Kamasi Washington connects Freddie Hubbard’s original “Hub-Tones” composition with African rhythms, stretching it out and deepening the sound and visuals with references to Pan African ideas, Nina Simone and Anita Hill. The video was directed by Jenn Nkiru, (see also: Beyonce & Jay-Z’s “Apes***”. Note the flag in the background: a Pan African flag by British-Ghanian artist Larry Achiampong. The trance-inducing choreography itself is referring to traditional Nigerian dances. I’m sure I’m still missing other visual clues and nods, but that’s just another excuse to watch this again and again.
